What's FRBR and Why Do I Care?
Glenn Patton, OCLC

The IFLA Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) represents the first systematic analysis of what information is most needed in library catalogs, how staff and patrons use bibliographic data, and whether catalogers give patrons and staff the information needed. FRBR uses an entity-relationship model that helps catalogers understand the conceptual structure of information resources. Learn about the concepts of the FRBR model and how those concepts may change the catalogs you build for your users.

Open Source and Technical Services: Do They Fit Together?
Stephen Hedges, Nelsonville Public Library
Joshua Ferraro, Nelsonville Public Library

While open source software has made inroads in other areas of libraries, open source tools are still seldom used by technical services. Yet well-established protocols and standards like MARC and Z39.50 should make it easy to dispense with proprietary technical services software. This session will discuss the current state of open source tools for technical services and describe some of the reasons librarians still seem to prefer commercial tools.

Pattern Recognition for Technical Services: Interpreting the OCLC Environmental Scan
Eric Childress, OCLC

Two years ago OCLC released a 150-page report, The 2003 OCLC Environmental Scan: Pattern Recognition . Widely read and quoted, the Environmental Scan is heralded as “destined to become a classic in the field.” The document earned an ALCTS President's Citation and became an integral part of libraries' planning activities worldwide. Touching on trends and topics such as disaggregation, digital rights management, open access, FRR, taxonomies, automated collection management, and much more, this session will summarize and update key findings from the Environmental Scan , and offer insights into critical trends – noted from the Environmental Scan and other sources – that will shape the future of library technical services.
