Purpose and Objectives

The Membership Committee is composed of a chair, an assistant chair, several at-large members, and a representative from each of the six regional chapters. The committee designs the annual membership campaign to include all types of libraries. The regional chapter representatives to the membership committee work to identify recruitment officers in every library within each chapter. The committee works in conjunction with other unit coordinators and chairs to publicize OLC and its activities.

Objectives

Goal 1: To effectively retain established members of OLC.

Objective 1.1: Find New Ways to enhance communication with current members.

Action Steps:
•  To use the web more effectively for communication

•  Create new and better website design •  Weekly Access
•  Use of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr.

Objective 1.2: Support the effectiveness of Local Recruitment Officers in 2010.

Action Steps:

•  Send a list of people who have not renewed by the second week of January to LRO's and ask that they update if those on the list are still employed at the library.
•  Send a list of people who have not renewed by the second week of March 2010 to share with Local Recruitment Officers and ask that they recruit one-on-one if possible.
•  Encourage the LROs to work with union representatives to promote the benefits of OLC membership in libraries with a union.
•  Encourage the LROs to promote OLC membership to support staff.
•  Have Library Recruitment Officers contacted by Chapter Representatives shortly after the webcast is announced to see if LRO's have questions about their role or if they require any assistance.

•  Chapter Representatives will provide assistance and support as requested.

•  Chapter Representatives will utilize other members of the Chapter Action Council as they deem necessary.

Goal 2: To recruit new members to OLC with an emphasis on current staff and students.

Objective 2.1: Promote value of student membership in OLC in 2010.

Action Steps:

•  Present information about OLC to students in the Foundations of Librarianship course taught Spring 2010 at KSU by (Rubin) and Columbus through KSU (Boon). Also staff a table at the KSU-SLIS Library Careers Night 2010 at Kent and Columbus.
•  Find out more information about the Foundations course available at the distance learning sites and present information at those.
•  Staff a table at new student orientation for KSU-SLIS students in 2010.
•  Work with KSU and the OLC Board to explore the possibility of a KSU Student Chapter of OLC.
•  Determine other universities that offer some type of degree in librarianship (Belmont Tech, Ohio Dominican, Capital University ) and ask to present information about OLC to appropriate classes or forum.

Objective 2.2: Engage chapter representatives more directly in the process of recruiting new members while retaining current members.

Action Steps:

•  Work with chapter representatives to develop a more involved role in the recruitment and retention process.
•  Have Chapter Representatives contact Library Recruitment Officers shortly after the second renewal goes out to see if there is any assistance they can provide perhaps sending out a renewal notice to those not renewing in their area between the second and third statewide notice being sent out.
•  Encourage Chapter Representatives to be more active in the recruitment process, attending functions in their regions where OLC recruitment would be appropriate.
•  Follow up with Chapter Representatives with monthly emails.
•  Support Local Recruitment Officers through Chapter Representatives.

Objective 2.3: Collaborate by reaching out to other professional organizations for Ohio 's librarians in 2010.

Action Step:

•  Contact Special Library Association Chapters about attending one of their meetings to discuss the benefits of OLC.

Objective 2.4: Find new ways to communicate more effectively to current and potential members.

Action Step:

•  To publicize the prospective member page.
•  Update and review the use of the OLC display board, tailoring the display board to individual audiences.
•  Focus on social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to promote the benefits of membership in OLC.

Goal 3: To work collaboratively with staff and programs in the OLC office and with other Divisions.

Objective 3.1 Encourage the OLC professional development calendar to include programs on job growth and job redirection

Action Steps:

•  Monitor membership as to the type of professional development events they would like to see offered.
•  Communicate those topics to the OLC staff.
•  Assist in marketing events that would benefit membership, particularly those just entering the workforce.

Objective 3.2 Market membership programs and activities on an on-going basis.

Action Steps:

•  Utlilize the weekly Access as a tool to communicate membership benefits throughout the year.
•  Provide membership updates in Access during the renewal period of November 2009 – February 2010.

Objective 3.3 Work with OLC Divisions to increase member involvement.

Action Steps:

•  Provide sample communications to Division Coordinators for initiating contact with new members to welcome them and to the nominations chair for soliciting active participation in and to their Division.
•  Work with Divisions to have members encourage colleagues not members of OLC to join. This includes working with Divisions to customize communication showing benefits to those in a particular Division.
