Module Strategies
Finding the best resources to fill a need requires good strategy.
What's Your Plan?
Once you've mastered the model behaviors and successful
communication needed to identify real information needs, where do you start looking for
answers?
What You Will Learn in Module 4
How can knowing the patron's source help? How important is it
to understand indexes and subject headings? What do you do with those impossible
questions?
When is it time to call an expert or to refer a question? How
can you be sure information is accurate? Module 4 helps you begin matching questions to
available resources for successful reference strategies.
What's New? Web Searching and Virtual Reference
New links and suggestions for virtual reference have been
added. In-house or remote, recent guidelines
state that "virtual reference is an extension of an institutions existing
reference services ... and all public services staff should have an awareness of the
virtual reference service's goals and basic operation."
Easier access to Web resources increases the need for careful
search strategies. The proliferation of Web resources and the commercial nature of many
search engines require skillful reference work. New links and material have been added to
most pages, e.g. Look It Up page and Search
Strategies page.
