Module Resources
Effective reference work requires knowledge of resources.
Where are the Answers?
Some reference work requires locating quick facts in almanacs
or dictionaries. Other reference questions need more complete explanations. Many searches require consulting a variety of resources, including
online and Internet tools.
What You Will Learn in Module 5
Why and how do you examine reference resources in your
collection? What resources are considered essential? Why will knowing a little about the
Dewey Decimal System make finding the right resources easier? What resources are available
online or on the Internet? Module 5 helps you learn about the reference
resources in your library.
What's New?
New resources are abundant on the Web, and there are now
virtual ways to connect users with the best resources. "Virtual reference service is
initiated electronically, often in real-time, where patrons employ computers or other
Internet technology to communicate with reference staff, without being physically
present." Technology includes chat, videoconferencing, Voice over IP, co-browsing,
e-mail, and instant messaging. Libraries may also provide roving reference or other
services that take advantage of laptops, PDAs, and WiFi (wireless) technology.
New links and content to reflect use of new technologies for
reference service have been added on many module pages, including the Internet sites, Examining resources
and Catalog pages.
