  1. What are the Dewey major subdivision numbers (100s, 200s, etc.) for these areas: Literature, Philosophy,  Languages, Religion, Social Sciences, Applied Sciences/Technology, Arts, Pure Sciences, Generalities, Geography/History?

  2. Describe what is meant by purpose, authority, scope, audience, and format in relation to a reference tool.

  3. If you don't know very much about a topic, what are three good resources to get you started?

  4. Why is it important for you to carefully examine and evaluate reference resources? Give some specific examples of the value of knowing resources well.

  5. Sketch the design for a form to use when examining and evaluating new reference books and materials. The form should have a place to identify all the parts of the book discussed in this module and a place for purpose, authority, scope, audience and format.

  6. Use the form you designed to do a thorough examination and evaluation of two reference books from the Essential Resources for Libraries list below. Choose one that is least familiar to you and one that you think you know thoroughly!
