4. (Requires Modules 4 and 5) A library pathfinder is a guide for patrons to resources for a specific topic. It serves as an overview of a subject area, and may include possible subject headings, appropriate indexes, specific resources, special library collections, names of local experts or referral agencies, reliable web sites, and specific library resources in both the reference and circulating collections. You might think of a pathfinder as a combination of the strategies and sources you would use with a patron who needed comprehensive information on a topic. Create a pathfinder for a topic that interests you, ask your supervisor for a topic, or use one of these topics: endangered species, censorship on the Internet, home decorating, light or noise pollution, do-it-yourself plumbing, e-Business and online shopping.

Your pathfinder, as any good resource, should indicate a purpose, scope, authority, and target audience and should be presented in a clearly organized format. Include the following in your pathfinder:

  1. Recommended subject headings to use in the catalog (the subject headings you find in the catalog that are the most successful at leading you to resources on the topic)
  2. Possible index terms to use when looking in reference books (the terms needed to find the information in the resources you are recommending for this topic)
  3. Appropriate indexes for finding articles (print or electronic)
  4. 5 specific resources that are either an Atlas, Bibliography, Encyclopedia, Dictionary, Almanac, Directory, Gazetteer, Handbook, Index, Manual, or Periodical
  5. Any special library collections if relevant
  6. Groups or agencies, for possible referral, who would have additional information
  7. Local experts if possible
  8. A web site that would be a good place for the patron to begin looking for information on the topic
  9. Search the catalog for 3 books on the topic (circulating books, not reference books or books meant to be used as reference - what you would recommend for someone who wants to read a whole book on the subject)
