4. (Requires Modules 4 and 5) A library pathfinder is a guide for patrons to resources for a specific topic. It serves as an overview of a subject area, and may include possible subject headings, appropriate indexes, specific resources, special library collections, names of local experts or referral agencies, reliable web sites, and specific library resources in both the reference and circulating collections. You might think of a pathfinder as a combination of the strategies and sources you would use with a patron who needed comprehensive information on a topic. Create a pathfinder for a topic that interests you, ask your supervisor for a topic, or use one of these topics: endangered species, censorship on the Internet, home decorating, light or noise pollution, do-it-yourself plumbing, e-Business and online shopping. Your pathfinder, as any good resource, should indicate a purpose, scope, authority, and target audience and should be presented in a clearly organized format.
