OLC Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of the Outreach and Special Services Division is to identify and assess outreach opportunities and give guidance for service to populations including disabled, aged, institutionalized, disadvantaged, children and other groups.

Unit Objectives

In addition to the goals and objectives in the Ohio Library Council's Long Range Plan,

1. Market our division.

•  Follow up letter and mailing of updated brochure to Outreach Retreat Participants, encouraging participation in division activities.

•  Brochure mailing and letter to all OLC public libraries.

•  Update current brochure at 2008 Leadership to reflect changing face of outreach, with an eye to non-traditional users.

•  Continue to use banner at OLC events.

2. Communicate to Division members

•  Appointment of ad hoc committee to address and upgrade presence on website, look into RSS capability.

•  Send out meeting notifications to all division members.

3. Plan and implement Bookmobile Rally 2008

•  Location and date- Wayne and Retreat planning committee

•  Program development – bookmobile task force with input from division. Request submission from regular division members

4. Maintain Elderberries online manual – Older Adults Task Force

•  Update with program submissions in June - after Chapter Conferences

5. Submit program offerings for Chapters and Convention that reflect changing outreach needs of non-traditional library users.

Current Task Forces and Chairpersons:

· Library Services to Older Adults Task Force – Annette Kovic
· Bookmobile Task Force – Marty LaVigne
· Outreach Services to Children Task Force – Denise Darbyshire

Library Services to Older Adults Task Force:
· Established in 1978
· Publishes information to libraries utilizing educational flyers, bibliographies and bookmarks
· Develops programs for older adults through electronic publications such as Elderberries and at program events including the Outreach Showcase, OLC Chapter Conferences and statewide conferences.

Bookmobile Task Force:
This task force provides support and leadership to libraries maintaining and planning bookmobile service for their patrons.

· Established in 1989
· Provides staff development at bookmobile conferences, OLC Chapter Conferences and other statewide conferences.

Children's Outreach Task Force:
This task force is committed to providing the best reading and library resources to children of all ages throughout our communities. By going where children are, children's outreach introduces children to wonderful children's materials and services to delight, engage, and promote literacy.

· Established in 2002
· Spotlights best practices in outreach to children
· Presents programming workshops on ways to meet the outreach needs of children
· Works closely with OLC's Children's Services Division
· Provides ideas for training for care givers
· Lists contacts for finding local care providers and other community agencies.
