To Wiki or Not to Wiki?
Mandy Knapp and Amy Brown, Worthington Libraries
(Originally presented December 2, 2010)

Getting tired of filing items in the vertical file? Not quite sure how to organize all of your programming information and readers' advisory notes? What about those conference notes that are sitting in a file? A wiki might be the tool for you! Wikis are collaborative spaces where people can post information, files, pictures and websites. Staff at Worthington Libraries have used wikis for several years to answer reference and readers' advisory questions and to help plan for programs.

What can you put in a wiki? It's really up to you. The best part about wikis is that you can tailor them to exactly what you need for your library system, work team or department. In one of our wikis we have a listing of local community organizations that have ESOL resources, technology tips and printing tricks, readers' advisory websites, school assignment information and maps to local libraries and that's just the tip of the information that is located there. We'll cover how to get your staff on board using this web 2.0 tool, how to scale a wiki to fit your desired purpose, first steps to get your wiki up and running and tips on how to maintain it. Gain real-life advice from everyday practitioners of this helpful and time-saving tool.

Objectives:

  • familiarize yourself with free wiki sites
  • learn how to create a wiki
  • discover what features wikis have that make them useful (i.e. security features, permission levels, ability to link)
  • view examples of library wikis and learn how they are used

Teamwork: All For One and One For All
Sheila Freyhof, Staff Development and Volunteer Coordinator, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County (Originally presented March 4, 2010)

We have been encircled by teams our entire life.  It took a team of health care providers to bring us into this world.  In preschool we had a team of teachers, followed by the soccer teams and little league teams into which our parents threw us.  We joined gymnastics teams, cheerleading teams and then study teams and sororities and fraternities.  Teams have always surrounded us.

This rapid moving webinar archive explores the essentials of teamwork beginning with its definition, followed by many of the country's leading business philosophies of teamwork, to the benefits of working in a team, to the specific roles of each team member.

This webinar is $10.00 for OLC members; $15.00 for non-members. Purchase this webinar and you will receive an access link via e-mail.
