This series of workshops includes intensive work with everyone from OLC staff and legal counsel to seasoned directors to subject matter experts in various library fields.

Agenda:10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Turning Outward: Concepts and Tools to Accelerate Community Impact

Carlton Sears, Director, Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County

Technologies that disrupt past norms, changing populations, increasing community needs and declining revenues challenge today's library leaders. Too often libraries respond by turning inward; looking first to what they can do to raise revenue and cut costs. Yet the libraries that are most likely to prosper now and in the long run are those that turn outward and think community first. Turning outward poses significant challenges that require a deeper understanding of the communities in which we live. This program will introduce concepts and tools that can help librarians to position their libraries to have greater impact and thus become more deeply valued assets in the life of their communities.

Building Cultural Competence

Jeff Agnoli, Agnoli and Associates

Every employee looks at work situations in individual and unique ways. Perhaps more than ever before, libraries are striving to create work teams that mirror their communities and make the most of their people’s diverse abilities. This session will focus on the business case for cultural competence in the workplace, the realities of a changing workforce and the advantages of a workplace that celebrates diversity.

2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Today’s Advocacy

Senator Richard H. Finan *
Lynda Murray, OLC Director of Government and Legal Services

Advocacy is a planned, deliberate and sustained effort to raise awareness of an issue. This is a crucial time for libraries and advocacy initiatives. Both governmental and local decisions are being made about staffing, public dollars, telecommunications, leadership and intellectual freedom concerns that will ultimately shape the ability of library customers to access information. This session will focus on learning how to be successful as a library advocate and position libraries to be the solution to larger community concerns such as literacy competencies, youth in crisis and assisting job seekers.

*The OLC is delighted to welcome special guest speaker Senator Richard H. Finan, who is the former President of the Ohio State Senate.

Senator Finan was first elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1973, having previously served as Mayor of Evendale. He joined the Ohio Senate in 1978 and was elected president in 1996.
