Library Marketing: Mission

Who we are: people, events, and image.

Marketing begins with the mission of serving the community. Special events and staff involvement are a critical part of communicating the library image, in the marketing planning process, and in promotion.

Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County

The web site and the examples of community participation exemplify the library mission: "As a public service institution, the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County exists solely to promote the cultural, intellectual, educational, and recreational welfare of the Knox County community..."

The Public Library of Mt. Vernon & Knox County web site has a virtual tour that allows users to click on areas of a map to see the photos with descriptions, giving users a sense of the products the library offers - without a visit! Pictured is the Young Adults area, a great area for promotional displays!

The staff participate in community events, such as pushing decorated book carts for the Danville Turkey Festival!

What's new in library marketing?

Euclid Public Library

Euclid Public Library online visitors may subscribe to the Reader's Advisory blog with RSS.

They also have digital television coming, and "there are knitting classes, movies to borrow, puzzles to play with, Concerts in the Gardens, Cook Book Discussions, bugs to investigate, mysteries to solve, biographies of fascinating people, comic books, the Internet to surf, and . . . BOOKS!"

Library Purpose Statement: "Euclid Public Library will provide a variety of resources to meet the lifelong learning needs of our citizens."

Washington County Public Library

Washington County Public Library has wireless Internet access: "All of the Washington County Public Libraries are set up for wireless access to the Internet (wireless hotspots). Library visitors with wireless cards in personal laptops or hand held mobile devices will have access to the Internet."

This is part of the mission of the Washington County Public Library: "to encourage lifelong learning by providing access to information, literacy resources, and technology to the people of Washington County."

Delta Public Library

Delta Public Library has a mission statement which begins, "The mission of the Delta Public Library is to support and enhance the quality of life for all residents regardless of age, race, or socioeconomic status ..."

They fulfill that mission with special events for the community, detailed in a photo gallery that includes window art, display cases, library events, story times, and teen activities.
