03/02/07 OLC Legislative Day 2007 Scheduled for April 18

A new Governor, all new statewide officer holders, new legislators…. same old funding concerns.

Governor Strickland will deliver his State of the State address on March 14 and submit his budget to the legislature on March 15. Early indications are that there is very little, if any, growth in the Governor's budget proposal. Will libraries and local governments see any growth in funding? After five years of freeze or cuts, we certainly hope so.

April 18 is the Ohio Library Council's Legislative Day 2007. This event provides an organized opportunity for library directors, staff, trustees, and Friends to meet with legislators and make their case for the necessary budget support to continue our library services.

This year's legislative day includes general sessions to provide updated budget information, a luncheon for legislators, representatives from other statewide offices to answer questions, and, new this year, a Ready to Read Showcase. As part of our OLC Ready to Read partnership initiative with the State Library of Ohio, we will have displays and staff from various early literacy programs in public libraries and from state agencies. Invitations to legislators and library directors were sent on March 2.
