03/15/10 David Lee King to Headline OLC Social Media Event

David Lee KingMark your calendar for May 6. The OLC is partnering with OHIONET for a special education event entitled Social Media for the Social Good. David Lee King's presentation, Freak Out, Geek Out, or Seek Out: Trends, Transformations and Change in Libraries, will focus on the choices that come with technology change - freak out about it, jump in unprepared, or seek out the best tools and trends for our libraries - and plan for those! King will describe the current social media transformation taking place, and explain how those changes apply to the library setting. King will discuss the changes a library needs to make to meet and participate in the new online, participatory world, and provide pointers to plan for these changes.

Later that day, Debra Jasper and Betsy Hubbard, Ohio State's Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism, will present Breaking Through the Noise: Capturing an Inattentive Audience in a Backchannel World. Jasper and Hubbard will discuss how, in a time of short attention spans and high expectations, libraries and other organizations can use social media to tell more powerful stories and build stronger relationships with supporters. They'll delve into how to develop effective visual strategies, deliver compelling presentations and tune in to tweckling, harshtags, and more. They will also examine the new thinking needed to reach broad audiences, and explore how libraries can use the latest monitoring technologies to listen to what people are saying about their programs and events.

The event will be held at The Ohio State University's William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library and an optional tour will take place immediately following this event at no additional charge. This comprehensive tour will highlight the three-year, $108.7 million library renovation. The restoration project restored the grandeur of the historic library, which opened in 1913, and adds technological and other upgrades to meet the 21st century needs of students and scholars.
