Governor Ted Strickland will be the guest of honor and speaker at the Ohio Library Council's Legislative Day 2008 on May 6 at The Westin Hotel (formerly the Great Southern) in Columbus. He will discuss his plans for Ohio 's economic recovery and the partnership between public libraries and the state in making sure all of Ohio's children are Ready To Read.
This year, to reduce costs, the OLC is not hosting a legislative luncheon. Instead, there will be a General Session at 9:30 a.m. that will include an update on HB 521, followed by a reception with coffee and light refreshments beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Governor will arrive at 10:00 a.m. and spend time meeting attendees. At 10:40 a.m., the Governor will make remarks that will cover his plans for Ohio 's economic recovery and the partnership between public libraries ant the state in making sure all of Ohio's children are Ready To Read.
Library attendees should take this opportunity to schedule visits during the day with their state legislators. Meetings should focus on HB 521, the legislation introduced to study the consolidation of libraries and other local government political sub divisions; libraries' contributions to economic recovery through education programs and services provided to so many small and large business owners in Ohio's communities; and local Ready To Read efforts. Visits should also include appreciation for the General Assembly's support of SB 185.
It is important to take advantage of Legislative Day 2008 to demonstrate the strength of public libraries' advocacy efforts. This year's work we do this year will begin to pave the way for the budget battle of 2009. This will be a great opportunity to meet Governor Strickland. Please bring trustees and Friends. Ohio's public libraries are an impressive coalition!
