04/23/07 Legislative Day 2007 Highlights

Representatives from Ohio 's public libraries turned out in force on April 18, 2007, at the OLC Legislative Day 2007. Members of the Ohio General Assembly once again saw “red” as more than 300 public library trustees, Friends, directors, and staff members descended upon the state capital dressed in red. Members of the House Finance Committee heard outstanding testimony from Debbie O'Connor, Director of the Geauga County Public Library, who spoke of the importance of stable and permanent funding of public libraries and in support of the Governor's budget proposal.

Legislators and library representatives visited more than 30 displays highlighting the early childhood literacy programs that many libraries have in place to serve the young children in their communities. Representatives from the offices of the Ohio Treasurer of State, State Auditor, and Secretary of State were on hand to discuss issues pertinent to public libraries such as Open Records Law, financial audits, voting regulations, and STAR Ohio. Finally, legislators joined representatives from libraries in their communities at lunch and heard Rich Levin, Tax Commissioner, talk in detail about the Governor's budget. The OLC thanks everyone involved for helping make the Legislative Day 2007 a great success!

More information including a copy of Debbie O'Connor's testimony is available.
