6/19/07 Libraries Could Be Affected By State Data Theft
As was announced by the Governor on June 16, a significant amount state data was compromised when a computer storage device was stolen from a state intern's automobile. In addition to state employees' personal information, the data also included information regarding local governments' bank accounts.
Since LLGSF payments are sent from the state to the county auditors' offices, the OLC is hopeful, but not certain, that public libraries' bank account information was not on the stolen tape.
Tim Keen, Senior Policy Advisor in Auditor of State's office, has been contacted regarding the appropriate protocol for public libraries to follow in order to protect their bank accounts. As the Auditor's office analyzes the issue, they promise to keep the OLC apprised of the situation. In the meantime, libraries are urged to monitor their bank accounts and report any suspicious activities.
