6/19/07 OLC, State Library Launch Ready To Read Training
We have a challenge in Ohio…and Ohio 's libraries are part of the solution.
Last year, over one-third of Ohio 's 130,000 kindergarteners arrived on their first day of school not prepared to succeed as learners. The Ohio Library Council and the State Library of Ohio have teamed up to make sure that all of children are Ready To Read.
The research is compelling. The savings from investing in early education reaps tremendous long-term benefits for children, families and communities.
Public libraries need to reach out to these children. We need to work with our community head start programs, churches, hospitals, clinics, daycare programs, parents, and grandparents. We need to find everyone everywhere who are touching the lives of our children and help them make a difference.
The OLC, in cooperation with the State Library of Ohio and the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science, will launch a series of Ready to Read training programs beginning with its Early Childhood Literacy: How Your Library Can Enhance Early Learning program, August 8, at the University Plaza Hotel, Columbus. In this program, attendees will discover how they and their libraries can capitalize on opportunities to foster and enhance early childhood learning thereby increasing the library's value to the residents in its service area.

The Ready to Read training will continue throughout late-summer into early-fall with a series of training programs.
Sue McCleaf Nespeca, Certified ECRR Trainer, will conduct the training and share strategies for working with both children and parents on the importance of early reading. Emphasis will be given to the six pre-reading skills needed to help children learn to read.
