6/26/08 Children and Teen Services Conference in August

The 2008 Children and Teen Services Conference will be held August 20-21 at the University Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Columbus. Keynote speaker Sheila Mikkelson, Director of the Seymour Public Library District in Auburn, New York, will help library staff understand the childhood and adolescent stages that play an important role in shaping library services for these age groups. Mikkelson has conducted intensive research on the developmental stages of youth and will share her knowledge and give suggestions for redirecting negative behavior, reference, outreach, programming, and getting library administrators on board in advocating for these important age groups.

The conference will feature other outstanding speakers, such as author Cynthia Furlong Reynolds, Alison Caplan from the Akron Art Museum, and many of your peers, covering a wide range of topics for reaching your young patrons in the most innovative and effective ways. Some topics include:

  • Award and grant opportunities
  • Understanding Webkinz
  • Using music in programs for school-age kids
  • Health and wellness programming for teens
  • Bookclubs for teens
  • Attracting ‘tweens to your library
