Ohio Reference Excellence Web-based Training, Print Version Document
- Before you begin any search, you need to know the patron's real question and you should
also know the patron's original source, if any. Describe in your own words why this is
important and give an example.
- What is the source of the subject headings used in your library catalog?
- Find at least five subject headings in your catalog that you think would apply to a
question from someone who wants to start a small business raising dogs, but isn't sure
what kind of dog, and has very little business experience, especially with tax laws for
small businesses.
- Indexes lead you to whole books, parts of a book, or articles in magazines. Give a
specific example of each in your library.
- Why is it important to use the index of a reference source? Give an example.
- Why is it necessary to look up information you think you know?
- What are two common causes of giving inaccurate information?
- Are there any frequently used resources in your library that need to be updated?
- List all the places you would expect to find information about Ohio in your library and
what type of information you would expect to find in each.
- What is Information & Referral?
- Describe any list, directory, database, or Web site that your library uses for Information &
Referral.
- Describe at least three things you can do if the information the patron needs isn't in
your library.
- What is the difference between a reference transaction and a directional transaction?
Give an example of each.
