Make plans now to attend this lively and informative dinner event in your area. The OLC's Trustee Dinners provide a great opportunity for library trustees to share information and ideas with their counterparts throughout the region, and address the challenges facing Ohio's public libraries.
How safe is your library?
An issue of increasing concern to public libraries throughout the state is safety and security -- of library patrons, the library's collection, and the library building itself. It's not an issue limited to just large, urban libraries but one impacting every library, regardless of size, in communities all across Ohio.
The Trustee Dinner program will focus on the kinds of security challenges libraries are encountering, the impact they are having on library services, and what measures can be taken to limit, if not alleviate the problems. We'll take a look at the library board's responsibilities in working with the library staff, security personnel, local authorities, and even library design and construction consultants to help create a safer library environment.
2008 Ohio Public Library Funding and Legislative Update
2008 marks the beginning of a new era for Ohio's public libraries. Beginning in January, Ohio's public libraries are now funded through 2.22% of the state's general revenue tax revenue rather than 5.7% of the state's declining income tax. Plus, libraries are now off of the funding freeze that has been in effect since 2002. For the first time in nearly six years, Ohio's public libraries have an opportunity to see an increase in state funding. What's that mean for your library, and what does the future hold for Ohio's public libraries when the state continues to struggle with a continuing unsteady economy?
OLC staff also will present an update on the latest legislative issues impacting libraries, including SB 185, the omnibus library legislation, OLC's work on the tangible personal property tax issue, and more.
