Meet Susan Allen
How long have you been in your current position?
I’ve been in my current position for 6 years.
What do you love most about your job?
I love helping patrons, and I’m fortunate to work with such an amazing group of people. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is helping others grow and develop their skills.
How long have you been an OLC member?
I’ve been an OLC member for 25 years.
Why did you become involved with OLC?
As a new librarian, I wanted to connect with library professionals outside of my own library system. OLC seemed like a great way to meet people, collaborate with others, and gain experience working on projects and committees.
What was the first OLC event you attended?
The OLC Convention & Expo.
What was your first OLC committee or division experience?
My first experience was serving on the Membership Committee.
Past/Current Involvement with the OLC?
I’ve been involved with the Membership Committee, IT Action Council, Management & Administration Division Action Council, and the OLC Convention & Expo Program Planning Committee.
How has OLC membership contributed to your professional growth?
OLC has given me the opportunity to build connections with library professionals across the state that I likely never would have met otherwise. I’ve also served as secretary, assistant chair, and chair for committees and action councils, which helped me strengthen my leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
What is your favorite OLC memory?
It’s hard to choose just one memory, but one of the most rewarding experiences is working with a group to plan an event — whether it’s the annual Convention & Expo or a smaller workshop or conference — and then seeing it all come together successfully.
What is the best professional advice you’ve been given?
Some of the best advice I’ve received is don't take everything on yourself. Good leaders learn how to delegate, support others, and trust their teams. I’ve also been encouraged to stay involved professionally, whether through OLC, ALA, or local initiatives, while maintaining a healthy work/life balance.
Where can you sometimes be found in your free time?
Exploring a Columbus Metro Park or attending a concert. I love loud live music!
