2026 Librarian of the Year

The Ohio Library Council has selected Paula Brehm-Heeger, the Eva Jane Romaine Coombe Director of the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library, as the 2026 Librarian of the Year. Through visionary leadership, innovative community partnerships, and a steadfast commitment to equitable access, Brehm-Heeger has expanded the impact of the Cincinnati library while helping shape a stronger future for libraries across the state.

As director of one of the nation's largest and busiest public library systems, Brehm-Heeger has led initiatives that expand access to library resources and create welcoming spaces where people can learn, connect, and thrive. Under her leadership, the library has invested in facility improvements, expanded evening service hours to better meet the needs of working families, and introduced innovative programs such as the Telescope Lending Program.

Brehm-Heeger has also strengthened the library's role as a trusted community partner by forging collaborations that address local needs. Through collaborations with organizations such as Jewish Family Service, Episcopal Retirement Services, Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority, the Turner Construction Foundation, Holden Hands for Mission All-In, and the Black Music Walk of Fame, the library has created new pathways to learning, social connection, and essential resources. Programs such as JFS at the Library, which connects residents with on-site social services, and senior lunch programs offered through Episcopal Retirement Services, demonstrate Paula’s commitment to positioning the library as a trusted partner in addressing community needs.

Equally important is Brehm-Heeger's investment in library staff. In partnership with the Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, she launched the Community Leadership Certificate Program, a 33-credit-hour online program that equips employees with the skills they need for leadership roles. This program has strengthened the library's capacity to serve its community while preparing the next generation of library leaders.

Beyond her local leadership, Brehm-Heeger has made significant contributions to libraries throughout Ohio. As chair of the Ohio Library Council's Government Relations Committee, she helped shape legislative priorities that supported public libraries during a challenging period for library funding. Through her advocacy and testimony before the Ohio General Assembly, Brehm-Heeger strongly advocated for sustainable library funding with OLC, defended local decision-making, and encouraged continued investment in the library services that communities rely on every day.

The Librarian of the Year Award recognizes a librarian whose recent achievements have made a significant impact on library service and the profession. Through innovative leadership, meaningful collaboration, and dedicated advocacy, Paula Brehm-Heeger exemplifies the leadership and vision that this award celebrates.

She will be formally recognized during a special ceremony on October 21, 2026, at the Kalahari Convention Center in Sandusky as part of the Ohio Library Council's Convention and Expo.
